letâs get started.
This has been a shitty year for all of us. Covid-19 pandemic changed many things, and the world stopped for some time. But, we humans have the power to face adversities collectively for many years and one of the most important qualities of all of us is - Resilience!
And no doubt we will definitely come out of this with more strength and skills.
There were many things that kept me motivated and helped me grow mentally. The best thing that happened to me this year was finding the right kind of people, books, podcasts, resources, etc. and the process is still going on.
In this weekâs issue of âCuriosity Cultureâ, I am going to share all the best things I have come across this year with all of you. So, In short, it's #Rewind2020!
So, letâs start!
đTOP BOOKS of 2020!
I havenât completed most of these books. I have come across these books from various sources. I personally read some of it and it helped me. I hope it helps you too.
1ď¸âŁ Tool of Titans by Tim Ferris
One of the best books I have come across this year - Tools of Titans. Tim Ferriss, the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek and host of the best podcast âThe Tim Ferriss Showâ. He has hosted many great people on his podcast. And this book is a collection of all the wisdom from great entrepreneurs, thinkers, writers, athletes, and creators. It is very practical in nature. As he calls it - It is a compendium of recipes for high performance. Start reading it now! Take notes and apply things in your life.
2ď¸âŁ Seeking Wisdom by Peter Bevelin
Seeking wisdom is the result of Bevelinâs learning about attaining wisdom. Some roads lead to unhappiness. An understanding of how and why we can "die" should help us avoid them. We can't eliminate mistakes, but we can prevent those that can really hurt us. Using exemplars of clear thinking and attained wisdom, Bevelin focuses on how our thoughts are influenced, why we make misjudgments, and tools to improve our thinking. Really great book which focuses on âWhy do we behave as we do?, What do we want out of life? What interferes with our goals?
3ď¸âŁ The Alamanack of Naval Ravikant
Naval Ravikant is an Indian-American entrepreneur and investor. He is very well known in Silicon Valley. I am a fan of Naval Ravikant. His knowledge of different subjects from science and technology to spirituality is a treat to read and listen to. This book is a collection of all the talks, threads, essays, shows he has done. Eric Jorgenson has done a wonderful job of collecting all his wisdom in a structural manner and with context. It is a guide to wealth and happiness. And the book is free. You can read/download it here.
4ď¸âŁ Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss
Negotiation is a life skill. We all do negotiations all the time in our daily life. As he said in the book, â In my short stay I realized that without a deep understanding of human psychology, without the acceptance that we are all crazy, irrational, impulsive, emotionally driven animals, all the raw intelligence and mathematical logic in the world is little help in the fraught, shifting interplay of two people negotiating. From former FBI top international hostage negotiator to now author, speaker, and businessman, he is teaching all tested approaches of negotiation to all of us through this book.
5ď¸âŁ âInfluence: The Psychology Of Persuasionâ by Robert Cialdini
A self-described âsuckerâ for sales tactics, Robert Cialdini was every salesmanâs dream prospect, and he wanted to know why. To find out, Dr. Cialdini, a social psychologist, worked undercover in fields like sales, PR, advertising, and fund-raising to discover what actually makes people comply with the demands of others. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion is the summary of what he learned. It is one of the best books for every marketing student out there and people in general. It teaches us to persuade others with the help of science and makes us aware of how we get persuaded by others.
Honorable mentions:
Alchemy by Rory Sutherland
Collected Stories by Gabriel Marquez
The Choice Factory by Richard Shotton
đ Top Podcasts of 2020!
One of the best things that happened to me in 2020 - Discovering lots of Podcasts!
I have searched and discovered many great podcasts. It is just a completely different world. And in 2020, if you havenât listened to the podcast and then you are missing a lot.
There are tons of podcasts out there on everything under the sun!
My podcasts recommendations are based on popularity in some cases and in some of my personal experiences. I have listened to business podcasts most this year. Apart from that, some are based on life, spirituality, and personal growth.
Here it goes:
1ď¸âŁ The Joe Rogan Experience
Joe Rogan is an American stand-up comedian, UFC color commentator, and he hosts the popular Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast. With over 1,585 episodes and counting, the JRE has been running for almost 10 years and is one of the most listened-to contemporary podcasts. It is one of my favorite podcasts that covers everything under the sun. Joe Rogan is a great host, he listens to the guest very patiently and asks sensible questions. Here is my favorite episode of JRE with NAVAL RAVIKANT - You will become a fan of him after listening to this episode.
2ď¸âŁThe Tim Ferriss Show
Tim Ferriss is a self-experimenter and bestselling author, best known for The 4-Hour Workweek, which has been translated into 40+ languages. In this show, he deconstructs world-class performers from eclectic areas (investing, chess, pro sports, etc.), digging deep to find the tools, tactics, and tricks that listeners can use. This show is another favorite on my list. Tim Ferris invites people from diverse backgrounds and tries to understand what makes them different and successful. Here is my favorite episode - Matthew McConaughey â The Power of âNo, Thank You,â Key Life Lessons, 30+ Years of Diary Notes, and The Art of Catching Greenlights.
3ď¸âŁ Everyone Hates Marketers by Louis Grenier
Everyone Hates Marketers is a no-fluff, actionable marketing podcast for people sick of shady, in-your-face marketing. Louis Grenier interviews marketers who are not afraid to cut through the BS and say things as they are. Learn how to get more visitors, more leads, more customers, more long-term profits, by using good marketing: by treating people the way you'd like to be treated. Here is my favorite episode - EHM with my favorite marketer Mark Ritson
4ď¸âŁ Business Wars by Wondery
Netflix vs. HBO. Nike vs. Adidas. Business is war. Sometimes the prize is your wallet or your attention. Sometimes, itâs just the fun of beating the other guy. The outcome of these battles shapes what we buy and how we live. Business Wars gives you the unauthorized, real story of what drives these companies and their leaders, inventors, investors, and executives to new heights -- or to ruin. Hosted by David Brown - He is the best in the business. Here is my favorite series of episodes - Netflix vs Blockbuster
Marvel vs DC
5ď¸âŁ The Knowledge Project by Shane Parrish, Farnam Street
The Knowledge Project is packed with timeless insights and ideas direct from the source, each episode of The Knowledge Project upgrades your thinking and change the way you see the world. Master the best of what other people have already figured out. This podcast hosted by Shane Parrish is the goldmine of insights from lots of great thinkers, entrepreneurs, and their timeless ideas. Here are my favorite episodes - Chamath Palihapitiya: Understanding Yourself
Daniel Kahneman: Putting Your Intuition on Ice
6ď¸âŁ Vedanta Talks
Talks on Vedanta given by Swami Sarvapriyananda at the Vedanta Society of New York (founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1894). Vedanta is one of the worldâs most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions. This was one of the best finds of 2020 for me. This podcast covers commentary on âVedasâ and âBhagavad Geetaâ. Swami Sarvapriyananda is an excellent orator. You will be mesmerized by how he tells stories and unfolds the truths in the sacred scriptures of India. Here is my favorite episode -
